Your office calendar is not proof of progress

Your office calendar is not proof of progress. It might be proof you have stopped learning.

Simon Sinek tells the story of two lumberjacks.

Same hours. Same job.

One leaves for an hour every day. And still cuts more wood.

When asked where he goes, he says: “I go home and sharpen my axe.”

That line gets misunderstood.

Sharpening the axe is not doing nothing. It is stepping away from the work to get better at the work.

Business people forget this because busy is easy to defend.

The packed calendar. The instant reply. The late message.

The person who is always available.

We treat that as commitment. Sometimes it is just a person repeating the same method with more pressure.

More effort. Same mistakes.

More hours. Same ceiling.

More output. No better result.

A full day can still be a weak day.

Full of calls that teach you nothing. Tasks that build no skill. Decisions made from old thinking.

Work repeated because nobody stopped to fix the process.

By the time you notice the cost… You have usually renamed stagnation as discipline.

Save this for the next time your calendar feels full but your work feels the same.

5 signs your axe needs sharpening:

  1. You keep solving the same problem twice. ↳ Learn the system behind it.

  2. You are working harder, but not getting better. ↳ Study someone who does it at a higher level.

  3. Every task takes the same effort it did last year. ↳ Fix the process, not just the pace.

  4. You avoid learning because delivery feels urgent. ↳ Block the time before the work demands it.

  5. You treat skill-building like a bonus. ↳ Make it part of the job.

I have done this too. Kept producing because learning felt slower. Stayed busy because fixing the method meant admitting the old one was weak.

That is how work becomes a loop.

A dull axe still moves. It just takes more force to get the same result.

Take the time.

Use it to learn. Use it to reflect. Use it to improve.

It isn’t the sweat on your brow that brings down the tree. It’s the time away to find your edge.
