Your MEDDPICC data is lying to you
Your MEDDPICC data is lying to you. The issue is not the framework.
The issue is what you use it for.
I wrote about Munger & the Inversion Technique a couple of weeks ago.
The Inversion Technique applies directly to MEDDIC\MEDDPICC.
John McMahon built the original MEDDIC as a risk tool. A GPS for navigating deals.
Most sellers use it like admin.
They fill it in after the call & clean it up before forecast. They use it to prove the deal belongs in commit.
That is where deals get dangerous.
The seller asks: โDo we have a Champion?โ Then they look for proof that says yes.
That is not qualification. It is self-protection.
I call this the Autopsy Before Deal Death. Everyone can see what killed the deal once it is dead.
The weak Champion. The fake Economic Buyer. The vague pain. The mystery committee.
The risk was visible early. The team did not want to look.
Before your next forecast call, assume the deal is already closed lost. Then ask: Which assumption killed it?
M - Metrics. The CFO rejects the business case in the final week. Which number failed?
Did you use the buyerโs own numbers? Or did the ROI story come from your pitch deck? A metric the buyer did not help build is one they will not defend.
E - Economic Buyer. The deal dies in a meeting you are not in. Did you confirm who could release budget? Or did you mistake a senior title for control?
The Economic Buyer who nods in your meeting & stays silent in the executive room was never your Economic Buyer. They were your risk.
D - Decision Process. The deal slips two quarters. A committee member appears late.
Someone has veto power. You never had their name. That was not a surprise.
That was the deal telling you it had no process
I - Identified Pain. The buyer chooses the status quo. Did they put a number on the problem?
Did you price the cost of doing nothing? Or did the pain stay vague because they kept taking your calls? Comfortable pain does not move budget.
Pain needs a cost. Without one, you have a polite conversation.
C - Champion. Your Champion loses the internal argument. Did you test whether they could sell without you?
Did you arm them with the business case? Did you know who they needed to beat? Enthusiasm is not advocacy.
A Champion who cannot win internally is a Coach with a better title.
MEDDPICC does not fail because the letters are wrong.
It fails because sellers use the letters to defend the deal instead of finding the risk. Good sellers look for risk before forecast turns it into a story.
If this deal is already lost, what killed it? Run the Autopsy Before Deal Death. Not after.
