Office politics do not break a company all at once. They start as a hairline crack in the foundation, easy to ignore until the building no longer feels safe.

They take over when leaders reward loyalty more than truth.

Steve Jobs said: β€œIn weak companies, politics win. In strong companies, the best ideas do.”

I have seen both inside the same company. At the start, the culture was simple.

Do great work. Help each other. Help partners & customers.

The work kept people honest. Then the company grew.

Slowly, different behaviors started getting rewarded.

Results mattered less. Loyalty mattered more.

Some strong leaders left. Some new leaders cared more about protecting themselves than building something good.

That was when the culture started to crack. People became careful with the truth.

Meetings got quieter. Bad ideas survived because the right person backed them.

Useful disagreement started to look dangerous. The people with the most integrity stopped speaking.

Energy moved away from customers & toward internal power. That is how good companies weaken.

Not when revenue drops & growth slows.

Much earlier.

They weaken when honesty gets expensive. They weaken when people learn loyalty is safer than truth.

They weaken when survival starts getting mistaken for professionalism. There is a personal lesson in this too.

Do not stay too long in an environment that no longer shares your values. I did.

I wanted to believe the company I knew was still there. It was not.

By the end, I was working for a leader who was unethical & unfit for the role. I left.

Looking back, I should have left sooner.

A healthy company will challenge you. A toxic one will ask you to edit yourself to stay in good standing.

From the outside, the company can still look successful.

Revenue & growth can be strong. The brand can look healthy.

But underneath, the crack is already spreading. That is the part many people miss.

Companies rarely fall apart when everyone notices. They fall apart when people see the crack & protect the people widening it.

So ask yourself: Is your company fixing the crack, or rewarding the people widening it?
